Increasingly, the rise of digital technologies is riveting business-to-business editors, adding new concerns to the age-old journalistic challenges we face.

The many changes wrought by the move online — and how to continue producing great print and Web-based journalism— are the twin themes of the ASBPE National Editorial Conference now being planned for Aug. 2–3 at New York City’s Roosevelt Hotel.

The outline of an exciting two days in Manhattan — ASBPE’s first National Conference in New York — is taking shape as our program committee fine-tunes ideas and develops speaker invitations. We are looking at some high-powered keynote speakers and presenters for a wide range of programs.

For now, we have created a thematic structure that aims to help us all provide solid journalism and to learn the advantages and weaknesses of new Internet tools and business models.

Day One of the conference will investigate the digital realm. We will start with the basics of the shift to online and look at publishing business models. The day will then move into case studies and discussions of how-to questions, ethical concerns, and management issues, with all programs open to attendee feedback.

Day Two will focus primarily on principles for achieving editorial excellence, and for enhancing individual careers among editorial staffers at all levels. Here too, cases will be plentiful, and sessions will concentrate on practical applications and group participation.

ASBPE organizers also are developing some optional networking adventures (see sidebar).

More interactivity

This conference will be our most interactive yet, and include peer-to-peer roundtable discussions for both days, headed by experts on a variety of topics. Time on both days will be given to open forums with colleagues and speakers.

Specifically, at lunch on both days of the conference we will be assigning topics to each table for discussion, to be led by a conference speaker or other editor.

A special Day-One session on Web ethics will include topical scenarios — much like our successful ethics program at last year’s conference — and will include a “tips & tactics” discussion, with open Q&A time.

On Day Two, one highlight will be an Azbee Excellence Clinic, an interactive, roundtable session that will examine publications. The discussion will be divided into categories, with an expert assigned to each.

Some categories might include:

  • Covers and contents pages.
  • Web site home pages.
  • Writing headlines, captions, display quotes, subheads, titles for tables.
  • Feature writing.
  • Editorial structure, design, and service journalism.
