Initiatives, including foundation, webinars, tip sheets, in the works

Foundation will support ASBPE’s educational, ethics programs; association also has launched Facebook group.

In response to comments on our recent membership survey and the growing number of members who live in areas that lack a local chapter, ASBPE is introducing several Web-based benefits. And to bolster these and other ongoing educational initiatives, ASBPE will unveil its nonprofit foundation at the National Editorial Conference in Kansas City, July 24–25 .

Foundation

Next year, ASBPE will launch a nonprofit foundation to support new education and ethics programs and bolster ASBPE’s ongoing educational services, such as the national conference, the Young Leaders Scholarship, and Stephen Barr award. It will also allow ASBPE to expand research activities and promote its ethical guidelines within the industry.

Funding for the 501c3 will come from donations from ASBPE members and the many B2B publishers that benefit from the continuing education that ASBPE provides to their workforce.

Webinars

In December, ASBPE began offering a series of webinars:

  • Azbee Awards.
    • The first webinar, on Dec. 14, was about how to win an Azbee Award. The free webinar featured two managing editors with publications that consistently win Azbee awards. The editors examined how to create a culture of excellence and strategies for producing work that will get your publication an award. It will be made available online.
    • Another free webinar in January will demonstrate the mechanics behind ASBPE’s new electronic entry process.
  • How To Do a Webinar. A March webinar will take a look at how to produce a webinar. It will explore topics such as qualities to look for in a vendor and how to select a topic for your audience.
  • Second Life. In May, members may embrace the business future by attending our webinar about Second Life, the virtual world created in 2003 by Linden Lab (San Francisco) and used by companies to promote their business.
  • Getting a Book Deal. For those more interested in their present earning potential, there will be a webinar in September about how to leverage your expertise into a book deal. As business journalists we all have developed expertise within a given area. Learn how to harness this knowledge and use it to write a book. The webinar will take you through the brainstorming phase all the way through to items to include in your contract with the publisher.
  • Design. The last 2008 webinar will be devoted to design issues, such as conceiving and implementing effective magazine covers, and creating a synergy between photographs and text.

Tip sheets

In 2008,members will begin receiving free tip sheets on editorial and design topics. In most cases, tip sheets will capture the most important information conveyed in a particularly useful webinar or chapter event.

Longer than an article that would appear in Editors’ Notes or a writeup of a chapter event, tip sheets aim to be a primer on various topics, e.g. strategies for winning an Azbee award, and how to manage the editor-freelancer relationship in the digital age.

National blog

In response to the popularity of the blogs for the local chapters, ASBPE has launched a national blog moderated by national board members and feature posts from the leading figures in the B2B press.

This forum will allow members to convey and receive the information they need to know to excel in the industry.

ASBPE Facebook page

Some 50 million people already use Facebook, which is teeming with journalists and other professionals.

ASBPE’s site within Facebook is our organization’s own little clubhouse. It features a discussion forum, a slide show of the 2007 national conference, and a short video that explores whether print is, in fact, dead. Sign up to be with ASBPE friends.

New Web site

Longer-range plans include implementing important changes to our Web site. As it is the most visible face of ASBPE, we’ll be reorganizing and redesigning the site, while adding a number of new useful features.

Look for “how-to” content to be located more conveniently, online event registrations, and a special section for freelancers. We’ll keep you “posted.”
