ASBPE Award banquets honor 2010 regional and national Azbee Award winners

Winning work includes reports on noncombat casualties in Iraq, border troubles, crime control, fitness club shooting.

ASBPE recently named the top award winners, who were honored at regional banquets nationwide.

In Washington D.C., Hanley Wood, Collinson Media & Events, and GIE Media, Inc. were among the business-to-business publishers that received multiple Azbee awards during the Central Southeastern Regional Awards Luncheon at the National Association of Realtors building.

Titles receiving recognition for perennial award winner Hanley Wood included Builder, Multifamily Executive, and Residential Architect. A Multifamily Executive story on controlling crime on residential property sites garnered both editorial and design awards. “One of the most challenging aspects of this story was finding property managers who were willing to go on the record about crime problems they’ve experienced,” Hanley Wood’s Rachel Azoff said.

Residential Architect, which won a national gold award for overall photography and illustrations, was named as one of the Top Ten Magazines of the Year.

Homeland Security Today won the national gold award for best feature series for its coverage of the continuing violence along the Mexican border. “I’d like to dedicate this award to all of the journalists who have lost their lives in Mexico,” said HSToday’s David Silverberg. The prolonged eruption of violence there makes it one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist, he added.

The magazine Rejuvenate won a national gold award for the cover to its special section Youth Outreach. It was the magazine’s own youth movement that led to the creation of the striking cover. “Because we were targeting young people, we gave the youngest members of our staff complete control over the cover design,” said Jennifer Garrett of Collinson Media & Events.

Honoring the Western Regional Winners

The Kansas City ASBPE chapter sponsored an Aug. 17 luncheon at the Plaza III restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, to honor the regional and national award winners in the Western region.

Several editors from Penton Media’s Overland Park, Kansas office along with editors from Dallas, St. Louis, and the Kansas City metropolitan area attended the event. Kansas City president Jeff Gelski presented the plaques to the award winners in attendance.

Emily Saarela, senior managing editor from Transmission and Distribution World magazine, accepted the magazine’s many awards in the over $2 million division including a national bronze for supplement, a national bronze for case history, a West gold for case history, a West bronze for editorial/editor’s letter, a West silver for special section and a West bronze and West silver for technical article.

In that division, Mike Eby from Electrical Construction and Maintenance (EC&M) also received several plaques including a West gold for editorial/editor’s letter and a West bronze and a West gold for original research. In addition, EC&M writer Tom Zind earned a national gold award as well as the top honor as the Stephen Barr award winner for his article titled, “Killer in the Ranks,” about unsafe electrical systems in Iraq.

David Basler from One+ traveled from Dallas to Kansas City to accept numerous awards including a West silver and West gold for individual profile, a West silver for feature article design, and a West gold for front cover-computer generated.

For the under $2 million category, Missouri Lawyers Weekly accepted three awards: a national bronze award for government coverage, a West gold for regular department and a West silver for front cover-computer generated. In this division, Jim Lucy and Doug Chandler from Electrical Wholesaling magazine accepted a national silver award for how-to article, a West bronze for editorial/editor’s letter and a West gold for special section.

Club Industry magazine also won a national bronze award for humorous/fun department, a West gold for editorial/editor’s letter and a West gold for news analysis/investigative. Before accepting his award for news analysis/investigative, Stuart Goldman, managing editor for Club Industry, delivered a presentation about the work that went into his award-winning article titled “Lessons Learned.” His story explored the impact of the August 2009 shooting at an L.A. Fitness club on the fitness industry.

Ascend Media and Courier magazine editors were also on hand to accept awards on behalf of their publications.
