The 2013 ASBPE National Editorial Conference will be followed on the evening of Friday, July 26, by the 2013 Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet, to take place at the Grotto in Oak Brook, Ill. (a suburb of Chicago). The Azbee Awards is one of the most competitive contests for B2B, trade, association and professional publications. It recognizes outstanding work by magazines, newsletters and digital media: websites, e-newsletters, digital magazines and blogs. The competition is open to all U.S.-based publications. Specialty award categories of competition include Magazine of the Year, Web site of the Year and Multi-Platform Presentation of the Year. During the banquet, recipients of the 2013 Young Leaders Scholarship, for editors age 30 and younger, also will be announced. In addition, ASBPE will present its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award to Julia Homer, former founding editor of CFO magazine, who will speak at the event.

Another highlight of the ASBPE awards program is the Stephen Barr Award, which is given to the writer of the top-judged feature story from the competition. This year will be the tenth annual presentation of the Stephen Barr Award, endowed by the family of Stephen Barr — a gifted business-to-business reporter who died in 2002, at the age of 43. Awarded through the not-for-profit ASBPE Foundation, the award is presented at the end of the award ceremony.

ASBPE is rolling out Third Thursdays, a great new way for editors and designers to network and learn a little bit, too. Our chapters are organizing happy hours across the country on the Third Thursdays of the month in June, July and August, a great chance to meet some of your peers and talk shop.

And this is 2013, after all, so there’s a virtual component, as well. We’re encouraging attendees to discuss a different topic each month and Tweet about the best ideas you come up with, using the hashtag #asbpe. This allows editors and designers everywhere the opportunity to learn from your conversations and even participate themselves. Our National Board will be selecting the best, most insightful tweet each Third Thursday, and the winner will receive an iPad mini! Plus, we’ll have on-site drawings for iTunes gift cards, to help keep your summer rockin’.

So mark your calendar now and we’ll save a place for you at the bar.

ASBPE Recognizes Julia Homer with 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award

ASBPE Recognizes Julia Homer with 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award

JuliaHomer

CHICAGO, ILL. (June 7, 2013) —ASBPE has named Julia Homer its 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Homer created the editorial and design concepts in 1985 for a startup magazine called CFO, recognizing the changing role of the corporate finance executives just then starting to become vital drivers of American business. As chief financial officers began calling the shots on critical purchases — and serving as internal point people on mergers, acquisitions and divestitures — they often emerged as the most important company leader after the CEO. These finance whizzes found their own information source and voice in CFO magazine.

Homer dedicated herself to merging the specialized knowledge of B2B reporting with the production standards of general-circulation powerhouses such as Fortune and Forbes. The Mount Holyoke College graduate focused on drawing exceptional design, reporting, and editing talent to CFO’s Boston and New York offices. Over the years, many of the people she hired went on to top-level positions at consulting organizations, academic institutions and other media brands.

After CFO’s 1989 purchase by The Economist Group, Homer turned the publication into a global brand, helping to launch CFO Europe, CFO Asia and CFO China, as well as spin-offs such as Treasury and Risk Management, CFO IT, e-CFO, and CFO Human Capital. She pushed for the development of data-driven content, including scorecards, surveys and benchmarks targeting the finance department’s specific needs. She was instrumental in the development of the quarterly CFO/Duke Global Business Outlook Survey. By the time Homer left CFO Publishing in January 2012 as Executive Vice President, not only was her magazine “must” reading for nearly a half-million of the nation’s finance chiefs, but it had become the flagship of a powerful global brand encompassing both print and online publications, as well as well-respected conference and research divisions that have helped train new generations of corporate leaders.

CFO created a model across B2B publishing. It was ASBPE’s Magazine of the Year (1998 and 2003) and inaugural Multi-Platform Publication of the Year (2007). In total, CFO took 90 national Azbee Awards over a 15-year period, as well as four Folio awards as the year’s best business-and-finance publication. In 2010, Homer received a Stevie Award for Lifetime Achievement in executive management.

Before founding CFO, Homer worked as a science reporter. Since leaving CFO, she has returned to those roots, first serving as Project Manager and Development Editor for Nature Education and just recently accepting a position as Director of Communications at the New England Wildflower Society.

Homer is ASBPE’s first Lifetime Achievement Award-winner since 2008. She will be recognized at the 2013 Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet on July 26. The Azbee Awards is one of the most competitive contests for B2B, trade, association and professional publications. It recognizes outstanding work by magazines, newsletters and digital media: websites, e-newsletters, digital magazines and blogs.

The Azbee celebration will take place following the ASBPE National Editorial Conference at the Grotto in Oak Brook, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. For more information or to register to attend the 2013 ASBPE National Editorial Conference and/or Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet, click here.

ASBPE Kansas City Chapter State of B-to-B Industry Luncheon: “Editors” are out, content specialists and community managers are in

If business press editors had to define their relationship with the current state of the profession on Facebook, it would definitely be “complicated.” This was the general consensus at the April 24 meeting that focused on state of the b-to-b industry.

“The profession has undergone serious changes,” said Ron Wall, executive vice president for Advanstar Communications. “That doesn’t mean it’s all bad. There have been good changes for all of us.”

Wall, who runs Advanstar’s Veterinary Group, kicked off the meeting by introducing Faith—a dog born without front legs. He told the story about how a veterinarian recommended putting Faith to sleep, but a woman in Oklahoma adopted her. Now Faith walks on her back legs. Wall related this heroic pooch to the b-to-b profession.

“This dog was taught how to change and, in many ways, we have to change. We have to be retaught,” Wall said. “We have to learn how to walk without front legs.”

He discussed how LinkedIn, YouTube, iPhones, Facebook, Twitter and iPads have all been game changers for the industry. Today editors must make sure they’re sending out the right message at the right time in the right place—right now. For this reason, Wall said the term “editor” is outdated. For example, Advanstar is moving toward more fitting titles of community managers and content specialists.

“You’re building communities using content in a variety of ways,” Wall said. “The positions are no longer siloed. Everyone produces content that can pushed to all of the different channels.”

These different channels include e-newsletters, websites, social media, mobile and good old print publications. One of the problems with print is that by the time the reader receives the magazine the cover story is usually six to eight weeks old. That’s why, he said, there’s no reason to sit on an article anymore.

“If it’s good enough to write today, it’s good enough to put up today,” Wall said.

The most important thing to remember? Different technology will come and go but if you have a great audience and great content you will be OK, Wall said.

Keith Nunes, executive editor of the Food Business News media platform, agreed with Wall. Despite the ever-changing industry, quality content is the lifeblood of our work, he said. He also gave a quick disclaimer before he shared his insights.

“Everything I present today probably has a shelf-life of two hours because the industry is moving so fast,” Nunes said.

He explained how once upon a time business editors managed staffs, story production and stringers. Now they do all of that plus content management, content aggregation, data analysis, social media, video production, podcasts and so much more.

According to Nunes, this is why if you want reach to millennials, you should use these four screens:

1. iPad
2. Smartphone
3. Computer
4. Television

It’s easy to look ahead, but print is still there, Nunes said, especially in his company’s marketplace. Many of his readers rave, “I love my magazine” and “Never stop sending this to me.” This is just one example of how b-to-b has become a juggling act between digital and print media.

To keep all of the balls moving, he said today’s editors must constantly study their group’s analytics. When traffic is down, discuss how to bring it up, Nunes advised. It won’t be easy, but if a product or project isn’t working, you may have to kill it. This is not a failure, he said, and editors are going to have to get past that perception to move on to projects that work.

Nunes predicted that the industry may move toward paywalls and specialized content to generate additional revenue. But, everyone in the b-to-b industry is experimenting right now.

“There’s no model that works for everyone,” Nunes said. “It comes down to the market you’re covering.”

Webcast: Financial Modeling Tools for B2B Journalists

Register now for ASBPE’s March 28 webcast: Financial Modeling Tools for B2B Journalists

Insights, best practices and benefits of financial modeling tools that can give you and your B2B publication a competitive edge

Financial models, mathematical tools used to estimate the outcome of financial decisions before the committing of funds, are no longer the exclusive domain of high-priced management consultants. Now, B2B publications are also giving their readers such tools–and monetizing editorial content in the process–to help assess the feasibility of corporate projects.

In this March 28 webcast, Steven S. Ross will explore the many valuable uses and benefits of financial modeling tools in B2B reporting and publishing. Among other things, you’ll learn:

  • What a financial model is and how it works;
  • What should be included in a financial model;
  • Where you can go for expertise to draft them; and
  • How you can monetize them and attract more readers.

Of course, B2B journalists are using financial modeling for investigative reporting. Even small, simple models can be used to test the veracity of statements made by public relations people about new products or services. Financial modeling can also supplement other resources in the B2B journalist’s toolkit, including ratio analysis when analyzing balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements to determine the state of a company’s financial health.

Meeting Recap: ASBPE Interviewing Tips and Techniques Luncheon, presented by the Kansas City Chapter

Acing the Interview: Making the Most of a One-Shot Opportunity

The fate of an interview depends on how well you connect with the source, said Tom Zind, long-time freelancer and b-to-b writer, at a March 6 meeting of the Kansas City Chapter that focused on interviewing tips and techniques.

Zind, winner of ABM’s Jesse H. Neal Award and the ASBPE’s Stephen Barr Award in 2010,  said that before you even pick up the phone, do your research. “The more preparation you do before the interview, the better off you’ll be,” he said. He suggests going into the interview with a list of focused questions.

“Questioning should be as natural as possible,” Zind said. “A good interview equals a good conversation, and a good conversationalist equals a good listener.”

He said to keep an eye on the clock: If the source only has 20 minutes, you won’t have time to cover the basics. This is why doing your research beforehand is so important.

“The source is the keeper of the information, but you need to try to be the alpha dog,” Zind said.

He explained the source is motivated by two factors: The ability to help you understand the topic, and the chance to establish authority as an expert and get his or her message out.

Feeling a little lost? Zind said it’s OK to play dumb and admit confusion. Maybe just not at the beginning, he suggested.

“The road to your ultimate destination—a good story—goes through the source interview,” he said.

When the interview is said and done, Zind compared deciphering notes to untangling a fishing line. He said the key to a well-written article is quickly revisiting your notes.

In addition, he revealed five more interview challenges and tips on how to trump them.

1. The Distant Source: A good interview depends on forging some kind of connection with the source. Humanize it with some light banter at the beginning and relay up front a command of the subject. Your goal should be to have a conversation, not an interview.

2. The Reluctant Source: Interviewees who carefully measure their responses and hold back likely fear misquotes and being taken out of context. Demonstrate solid knowledge of the topic and you may have better luck convincing sources you understand the nuances of the issue and will be less likely to misinterpret. This is the gateway to getting answers to the tough questions.

3. The Fast Talker: The worst nightmare from a note-taking perspective, the speed talker, challenges our ability to document the interview. Type faster, listen more intently. If all else fails, be direct and politely request a slow down.

4. The Non-Talker: “Yes” and “no” responses won’t get us far. They’re often the novice interviewee who hears you typing your notes and clam up. Ask directly for elaboration. Ask open-ended, non-leading questions.

5. The Multi-Source (Phone) Interview: These demand extra vigilance in tracking who’s talking, cross-talking and dealing with signal delays. It’s worse when it’s a desktop speakerphone. If attribution is critical, ask them to identify who’s talking each time. Careful listening and tracking the conversation is key.

The American Copy Editors Society presents the National Summit on Plagiarism and Fabrication – April 5, 2013, St. Louis

Interested in learning more about the recent onslaught of plagiarism by professional journalists, and how it’s affecting the field? Below is a press release from the American Copy Editors Society describing their first ever Plagiarism and Fabrication Summit, to be held April 5, 2013 in St. Lous, MO.

NATIONAL JOURNALISM ORGANIZATIONS UNITE FOR SUMMIT TO STOP PLAGIARISM AND FABRICATION

April 5 summit to feature industry panel discussion, training sessions and e-book release

(January 23, 2013) – The year 2012 was arguably the worst for recorded cases of plagiarism and fabrication by professional journalists, prompting the nation’s leading journalism organizations to unite for the first time to collectively combat the problem.

On April 5, representatives of the American Copy Editors Society (ACES), Associated Press Media Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, the Online News Association, the American Society of News Editors, the Canadian Association of Journalists, the Radio-Television Digital News Association and Local Independent Online News Publishers will meet
in St. Louis for the National Summit on Plagiarism and Fabrication.

The summit will feature a panelist discussion on the common causes of plagiarism, steps to prevent it and how to handle incidents. The summit is free of charge and open to journalists, members of the media and others working in the communications industry. Following the summit, training sessions will be held on topics including aggregation versus plagiarism, social media plagiarism and plagiarism in the classroom. Registration for the afternoon sessions is $50.

“We are very excited to be playing an integral role in bringing this important summit to the communications industry,” said Teresa Schmedding, president of ACES, which is organizing the event.

The need for industry action was initially raised by Poynter Institute’s Craig Silverman in a blog last fall. Silverman cited cases in which journalists and media groups with good reputations were guilty of plagiarizing, falsifying information, faking bylines and reporting inaccurate or unverified information.

As a result, Schmedding called on other journalism organizations to join forces to fight the problem.

“These cases put a black eye on all of journalism,” Schmedding said. “Credibility has always been critical, but never more than now when media companies and trained journalists are telling readers their news is worth paying for because they are more reliable.” An e-book on the topic of plagiarism and fabrication is currently being developed by members of journalism organizations, as well as working journalists from all platforms, and industry experts and academics. The free e-book will be released during the summit in April and remain available for download following the event.

“Our goal with the e-book is to put tools in the hands of working journalists to help fight the problem,” said Schmedding, who also is the deputy managing editor/digital operations of the Daily Herald Media Group in suburban Chicago. “Our goal with the summit is to make sure this is the beginning of the conversation, not the end.”

“The timing couldn’t be better,” said Bob Heisse, past president of the Associated Press Media Editors and executive editor of the State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill. “Our landscape has changed so much,” Heisse said. “Just from the newspaper perspective we don’t have many ombudsmen positions anymore and we don’t have as many people editing stories as copy desks have consolidated. All that combined with new ways to deliver information instantly makes this an important time to ensure industry standards and ethics.”

Summit Information:

What: National Summit on Plagiarism and Fabrication

When: 9 a.m. – noon on Friday, April 5

Where: Arch View Ballroom, Ballpark Hilton St. Louis, One South Broadway, St. Louis

Cost: Anyone may attend the summit free of charge, but you must RSVP. The conference is running in conjunction with the ACES national conference. Attendees can attend a welcome reception, banquet or additional sessions for a fee.

“In today’s B2B industry, editors are expected to not only create a top-notch print product, but also update their Web site and social media platforms around the clock. Many editorial and online staffs are also expected to do more work with less resources,” says ASBPE National President Amy Florence Fischbach. “That’s one reason we enjoy recognizing the professionals who produce outstanding content on a day-in, day-out basis. The Azbee winners exemplify that high standard our industry sets.”

In 2012, in lieu of having a national conference, ASBPE has sponsored Boot Camp workshops in select cities nationwide. In addition, ASBPE’s chapters will present award ceremonies to recognize both the regional and national winners in their regions.

Winners are selected in about 60 categories. Five new feature categories have been added for the 2013 Azbee Awards of Excellence including solo author, group effort, short feature, in-depth feature, and impact/investigative feature.

ASBPE’s Azbee Awards of Excellence program is one of the most competitive for business-to-business, trade, association, and professional publications. The awards recognize outstanding work by magazines, newsletters, and digital media — Web sites, e-newsletters, digital magazines, and blogs. The competition is open to all U.S.-based publications. ASBPE membership is not required for entry, but members receive a discount on entry fees.

Founded in 1964, ASBPE is the professional association for full-time and freelance editors, writers, art directors, and designers employed by business, trade, and specialty press.

ASBPE National Board Selects Winning Logo

To reflect the shift to multi-platform publishing, ASBPE’s marketing committee recently sponsored a logo competition.

Designer Bonnie James, who has been working in B2B publishing since 1988, submitted the winning entry and earned a free one-year membership to ASBPE. James began in the industry as an illustrator for Gorman Publishing and is now working as a freelancer specializing in both print and Web design projects.

ASBPE Logo

To create her modern, clean logo, James used ITC Officiana Sans. This font was released in 1990, and its design was influenced by the typewriter fonts, Letter Gothic and Courier.

“A font based on typewriter style fonts seemed an interesting choice for an editorial organization,” James said.

As a nod to the old logo, James used the pipe key, which is often used to separate items in Web site navigation bars.

“Sometimes it’s good to keep an element from the old design for continuity and recognizability,” she said.

The newly redesigned logo will soon be integrated into ASBPE’s Web site banner, placed on the Azbee award certificates and  used in the association’s new membership brochure.

To learn more about Bonnie James, please visit her Web site at www.bonniejamesdesign.com.

Calling All Designers and Art Directors

ASBPE is redesigning its logo, and we’re looking to you for help. Send us your concept for a new logo for a chance to win a free one-year membership to the organization.

An ideal new ASBPE logo would convey the shift to multi-platform publishing (i.e., print and digital) and take into consideration all of our members – editors, writers and art directors. It would also incorporate ASBPE’s new tagline, “Fostering B2B editorial excellence.”

Please keep all files less than 2 MB in size, and send only JPEGs, TIFs and GIFs. All logos must be received by March 14. Send your ideas to marketing@asbpe.org.

Good luck!

If you have any questions, please e-mail Zach Phillips at marketing@asbpe.org.

2012 Young Leaders Scholarship Competition Now Open

Those wishing to nominate a young leader may do so via this Google document link.

To help young editors who are just starting their careers, ASBPE started the annual Young Leaders Scholarship in 2001. The scholarship allows younger editors who might otherwise be unable to attend the ASBPE National Conference or Boot Camps. It is open to all business editors, including print and Web.

Scholarships pay the conference or boot camp and hotel room costs for up to five U.S. applicants and two international editors per year. (U.S. applicants or their publishing companies are responsible for transportation to and from the conference, any non-conference meals, and other incurred costs; international winners get a stipend toward travel expenses.) Scholarship recipients also receive a free one-year membership to ASBPE if they are not already members.

Qualifications for the scholarship include the following:

  • Applicant must be 30 years of age or younger.
  • Applicant must have worked at least two years as an editor of a business magazine or the magazine’s associated Internet publication.
  • Candidacy must be sponsored by applicant’s chief editor.
  • Applicant must plan to continue in the business press as a career.
  • Applicant may not be a past ASBPE Young Leaders Scholarship winner.

Nomination forms go out around the beginning of each year. You can now access the 2012 nomination form via this Google document link.

Meeting Recap: ASBPE State of B2B Industry Luncheon, presented by the Kansas City Chapter

Kansas City Hosts State of B2B Industry Luncheon: Integration as a reality

B2B editors must effectively use different media to reach their audience

Integration of different media forms is a major driver of the current B2B industry, David Doherty, group sales and marketing director for Advanstar Veterinary, said at a Feb. 8 meeting of the Kansas City chapter that discussed state of the B2B industry.

“It’s really a highly complex situation right now with all the moving parts,” Doherty said.

He said these moving parts include print, enewsletters, websites, social networking sites, mobile devices and more.

“Clearly, B2B publishing used to be a pretty simple proposition … now we are in a truly integrated media territory,” Doherty said.

Each one of these channels has unique characteristics, and current audiences want to connect with publications in whatever method is easiest.

Despite all the focus on the new media, he also said print is alive and well, citing several studies showing that readers in 2012 still prefer print. Even so, print can be made interactive through the use of QR codes, and Doherty encouraged attendees to begin to explore the use of QR codes in the future.

Doherty said other drivers of the industry include social media and mobile media forms including phones and tablets. The challenge then becomes how to make a profit off these new media forms. Advanstar was able to incorporate sponsor tweets with its own for a promotion the sponsor was having at a trade show. Others at the meeting recommended not exceeding a one-to-eight ratio of sponsored messages to regular content messages.

Jim Lucy, chief editor with Electrical Wholesaling magazine at Penton, said he has been looking into making tablet computers work for his publication. He said mobile content and tablet computers are one of the most interesting things that have happened in the industry outside of the birth of the internet.

Lucy said many publications that do use tablet computer applications charge $4 to $5 to download an entire issue and do not work on a full-year subscription basis, although there is some debate on the best approach to this. He said it is important to keep in mind that the design of magazine content on tablets has a horizontal flow. He said websites and applications such as tabtimes.com and Flipboard are good places to go to learn about how to effectively use tablets.

In other advice to stay successful in the industry, Lucy said it is important to market yourself personally and he challenges editors to launch at least one new initiative per year.

“I have always tried to be an idea person,” Lucy said.

He said corporate leaders often see editorial as an expense, and editors can often get cut when times are tough. Being known as someone whose ideas bring revenue can help with job security, but he said to make sure you are presenting your ideas in a way that isn’t interpreted as brown-nosing or worse.

Lucy said to not fear repurposing content in new initiatives, and he has found industry tutorials and survival guides have proved successful for his publication.

Overall, Doherty said he doesn’t give the recession and a bad economy as an excuse for not meeting goals.

“You have to go find the revenue…if you aren’t getting the revenue, someone else is,” Doherty said.

ASBPE Relaunches Annual Magazine Critique Service

2011 MCS BrochureASBPE and Trade Association and Business Publications International (TABPI) have relaunched the popular annual Magazine Critique Service (MCS). The MCS is a program intended as a first step for B2B magazines interested in gauging their current performance. It allows editors to get feedback from some of the most respected editors working in B2B journalism today, and benefit from their colleague-to-colleague analysis of what’s working and what can be improved.

Not all magazines — especially smaller ones — can afford a full-blown revamp. The MCS provides objective, outside analyses that can show the decision makers in an organization how to take content to the next level. Magazines participating in the MCS will have three reviewers selected give detailed feedback on specific editorial and design aspects of the publication. TABPI will provide a report to the editor or publisher, who can thoroughly review the results with the editorial and design staff.

The service is a good investment for magazines desiring a revamp or a refresh after years of covering an industry. This arduous period for the publishing world is an ideal time to step back and refocus. Magazines get to ride on the experts’ learning and minimize costly trial and error situations. More dynamic editorial and design equates to more credibility with readers and advertisers, who will recognize the publication as the voice for the industry it covers.

All submissions for the MCS must be received on or about Dec. 20, 2011. The average processing time will be 8-10 weeks from the time materials are received. Complete details on the program and sample critiques are available on the TABPI website, at www.tabpi.org/mcs.

ASBPE board approves revised bylaws

Major changes include membership category for art directors, new committees.

Oct. 13, 2011 — In an effort to improve ASBPE, its benefits, programs and educational and networking opportunities, the board of directors have worked for the last two years on restructuring the organization and revising the association’s bylaws to reflect this new, exciting direction.

Immediate past president Warren Hersch with newly elected president Amy Fischbach; secretary/treasurer Tina Grady Barbaccia; and vice president Erin Erickson.

The board unanimously voted to approve the new bylaws, which include three major changes:

1. ASBPE is adding a new membership category for art directors.

2. The association has created new national committees for membership, education, ethics, strategic planning/governance, communications, research, competition, and finance. The communications committee includes several subgroups for the Web site, newsletter, e-newsletter, social media, and marketing. The education committee also has a subcommittee for Webinars.

We are still looking for dynamic, hard working, and experienced members to volunteer for these committees. If you are interested in serving on a national committee, please e-mail national ASBPE president Amy Fischbach at amyfischbach@gmail.com with your resume as well as what committee you are interested in serving on.

Here are the leaders of our new national committees. They will each serve a two-year term.

Education: Jessica Zelmer
Membership: Paul Heney
Research: Robin Sherman
Finance: Tina Barbaccia
Communications: Erin Erickson and assistant chair: Monique Hitchings
Strategic Planning and Governance: Warren Hersch
Competition: Tonie Auer
Ethics: Howard Rauch

3. As part of the new bylaws, ASBPE is also creating a new chapter board. In the past, this board was created solely of chapter presidents, but moving forward, this board will consist of other members from the organization.

Here is our new national board:

Amy Fischbach, president
Erin Erickson, vice president
Tina Barbaccia, secretary/treasurer
Warren Hersch, immediate past president
Danica Tormohlen, regional director liaison
Tonie Auer
Paul Heney
Monique Hitchings
Roy Harris
Mark Schlack
Jessica Zemler
Harry McCracken
Zach Phillips

The board of directors will work on restructuring the current chapter program in order for ASBPE to offer more regional educational opportunities. From this point on, the chapters will also be working with Danica Tormohlen, the new Regional Director Liaison. Danica is the Kansas City chapter president and will work with the chapter presidents over the next two years to answer questions, arrange monthly conference calls, and provide support.

Michael Peltz, Institutional Investor magazine, wins 2011 Stephen Barr Award Winner

Business journalist honored for “Inside the Machine,” a first-person story on events leading to financial crash.

Aug. 12, 2011— Michael Peltz — now the editor of Institutional Investor magazine, overseeing all editorial operations, including its magazine and digital properties — from July 2009 to July 2011 was executive editor for II’s America’s Edition.

Mike joined Institutional Investor more than 20 years ago as a young copy editor fresh from Dartmouth. He later moved on to Worth magazine and Bloomberg Markets, where he wrote and edited a wide range of features. He was recruited back to II in the early 2000s to create a new magazine devoted to the hedge fund industry called Alpha.

Soon after the 2010 “flash crash,” the mysterious technical event that sent financial markets plummeting globally, Mike was assigned a cover story to explain how this could have happened. He immersed himself in the project, visiting trading centers, and learning the technology from inside. He boldly chose to write his piece in the first person. His editor at the time compared his exploration of the subject to the travels of Howard Kutz, the trader who ventured down a dark river in Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.” In this case the river was technology. And the story was “Inside the Machine: A Journey Into the World of High-Frequency Trading,” in the June 2010 edition of Institutional Investor.

The story had an enormous impact, says Mike’s former editor, William H. Inman, reverberating throughout the Internet, and among specialty bloggers who called it “the bible.”

It is the sort of journalism that has defined Institutional Investor magazine over the years, says Inman. A tradition of excellence proudly embodied in the work of Michael Peltz.

ASBPE elects new executive board

Members elect Amy Fischbach as president, Erin Erickson as vice president, and Tina Grady Barbaccia as treasurer.

Aug. 15, 2011 — The American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) members have elected a new slate of officers for a two-year term. At the conclusion of the ASBPE national editorial conference in Chicago on Aug. 5, ASBPE named Amy Florence Fischbach as the president, Erin Erickson as the vice president, and Tina Grady Barbaccia as the secretary/treasurer.

Fischbach is a contributing editor for Transmission and Distribution World magazine and manages an award-winning monthly section called “Electric Utility Operations.” She worked for Primedia Business Magazines and Media (now Penton) for eight years, most recently as the managing editor of Club Industry magazine. She also worked as a staff writer for Electrical Construction and Maintenance magazine and CEE News. For the last four-and-a-half years, she has worked as a freelance writer and editor specializing in the B2B industry. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Kansas State University, and she studied abroad at the University of Sunderland in England. She joined ASBPE in 2002, when she was named a Young Leader Scholar. She then helped to start the Kansas City chapter of ASBPE and served as the vice president and president of the chapter. Fischbach then went on to serve a term as the national vice president of ASBPE.

During her two-year term as president of ASBPE, Fischbach plans on focusing on three key areas: increasing membership, developing a strategic marketing and communications plan, and offering valuable educational sessions for B2B professionals nationwide.

“This is a challenging, yet exciting, time for the B2B industry,” Fischbach said. “I am looking forward to recruiting new members, growing the organization, and embracing new opportunities for professional development.”

Fischbach is also planning to continue immediate past president Warren Hersch’s initiative to get more members involved at the national level. ASBPE is now recruiting volunteers for the following committees: governance, communications, program/education, strategic planning, competition, membership, nomination, finance, research, and ethics. She urges ASBPE members to download a Willingness to Serve form (37K Word doc).

“We encourage our members to get involved in helping us to shape the future of ASBPE,” she said.v

Erickson, the new vice president for ASBPE, recently chaired the conference committee for the national editorial conference Aug. 4-5 in downtown Chicago. She joined Putman Media in March of 2008. Erickson is responsible for posting all of the content as well as managing all of the social media applications for FoodProcessing.com. Prior to joining Putman Media, Erickson was the managing editor for a large B2B publisher. In addition to her work at Putman Media and on ASBPE’s national board, she is also a technical consultant for several online social networking ventures.

The new national secretary/treasurer, Tina Grady Barbaccia, is the executive editor of Randall-Reilly Publishing Co.’s Better Roads magazine and news/digital editor for Aggregates Manager magazine. Prior to joining her current company, in her professional career she has worked on publications including the following: Automotive Body Repair News (ABRN), Automotive Marketing, Appliance, Farm Chemicals and Farm Chemicals International, the Columbus Dispatch, the Record-Courier, The Gateway News and the Aurora Advocate. She has also contributed to The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, Homestyles magazine, World Highways and other publications.

Barbaccia has bachelor’s degrees in journalism and mass communication and in theater studies from Kent State University and a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Master of Science in Communication managerial program. She served as the president of the Chicago ASBPE chapter and just finished a term as the national vice president of ASBPE.

Like Fischbach, Barbaccia plans to focus on making ASBPE more valuable to its members and providing educational opportunities and training, with a particular focus on best practices in the current multimedia environment.

“In the current environment of ‘mobile journalism’ and the continued integration of print and digital media, it’s important to ensure our members understand the best practices and ethics of the merging mediums and the fuzzy line that has been created as we function as both journalists and marketers for our respective brands,” Barbaccia said. “I’m looking forward to a second term as a national officer to help move the organization forward and promote excellence in the business press.”
