Workshops for Medical Writers
Offered in Chicago Area

Core and advanced workshops enable participants to earn medical writing certificates.

The Greater Chicago Area Chapter (GCAC) of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) will offer three core workshops and one advanced workshop at its 2007 conference on Friday, Aug. 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in Lake Forest, Ill. The workshops are open to both AMWA members and nonmembers.

“Writing Abstracts” is a core workshop that presents an overview of the purpose and structure of the medical or scientific abstract, with emphasis on abstracts prepared for publications. It is recommended for medical writers and editors with up to five years’ experience.

“Making Effective Slides,” another core workshop, provides beginners and those with some slide-making experience the opportunity to learn ground rules for writing and designing medical slides; critique examples of good and bad slides, discuss production concerns; and evaluate slides created as homework assignments.

The core workshop “Tables and Graphs (Pharmaceutical Approach)” provides instruction on how to create and edits tables and graphs for technical documents.

The advanced workshop, “Understanding Sample Size & Study Power,” explores how various factors, particularly sample size and study power, influence a study’s ability to detect a measured and statistically significant effect and examines the role that precision and confidence intervals play in interpreting and reporting a study’s power, and is designed for experienced writers and editors.

Workshop fees range from $85 to $110 for members and from $185 to $210 for nonmembers. Registration for the all-day event, which costs $55 for members and $95 for nonmembers, includes breakfast and lunch. The registration form and fees must be received by July 2, 2007.

To receive credit toward a certificate, registrants must be enrolled in a curriculum program and submit completed homework by July 6, 2006 for the advanced workshop and by July 20, 2006 for the core workshops. The core curriculum enrollment fee, good for six years, is $125 for AMWA members and $235 for nonmembers. The advanced curriculum enrollment fee, good for eight years, costs $150 for AMWA members and $260 for non-members.
