Winners of 1998 Competition
for Editorial, Graphics and Online Excellence Announced
CFO and CIVIC.COM Take Top Awards
in
Annual Business Press Competition
CFO magazine, a publication
for corporate chief financial officers, and civic.com,
a magazine for government information systems executives, were
named Magazines of the Year by the American Society of Business
Press Editors (ASBPE) in a ceremony at the French Embassy's Maison
Française in Washington, D.C. The two publications were
among more than 100 recognized by the society for outstanding
editorial and design achievement.
This
year marks the 20th anniversary of the ASBPE awards competition.
The competition aims to encourage excellence in writing, reporting
and layout and design among the nation's trade and professional
publications. This year's competition drew more than 1,350 entries
from around the country, making it the most competitive in the
program's history. Entries were judged by a panel that included
journalism professors, consultants, designers and editors.
The awards ceremony was held in conjunction with ASBPE's annual conference, a day-and-a-half of seminars and lectures
aimed at sharpening editorial management skills. According to
ASBPE President Richard Green of Professional Publication Management
in Atlanta, "The broad support for and tough competition
in ASBPE's awards program demonstrate a high regard for professionalism
among trade and professional publications. These publications
have grown to become the journalistic equals of many consumer
publications, and in fact routinely break important business stories."
In addition to the Magazine of the Year awards, the society cited
42 publications for graphics excellence in 7 categories, and 66
publications in 11 categories for editorial excellence. For the
first time ever, ASBPE also recognized outstanding effort in online
publications, with awards for best original online news section
or newsletter, best original online database, and best overall
online publication design. "Online publishing is a fact of
life for many business publications," commented Lisa Pierce,
chairwoman of this year's competition and editor of Food &
Drug Packaging, St. Charles, Ill. "Although there's
no shortage of awards for Web sites, few are even in a position
to judge editorial quality. We wanted to recognize editorial quality,
rather than flashy graphics and technological gimmickry."
The overall Magazine of the Year awards and the online awards
are given to the best publications nationwide.
In all other categories - the print editorial and graphics categories
by magazine section - entries are judged first in one of four
regional competitions: East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, and Central.
The winners of those regional contests then go on to compete for
national awards.
