National Award Winners Announced
Banquet
honors high achievers.
More than
175 awards were given out at ASBPE's national
awards of excellence banquet June 21 at Bostons popular
Bay Tower Restaurant. The festivities took place as part
of the annual
editorial conference.

Power publisher Gerhard Gschwandtner explains his philosophy
for running an award-winning magazine. |
The sold-out
banquet congratulated Selling Power (circulation 80,000
or more) and Sales & Marketing Management (circulation
less than 80,000) for winning the Magazine of the Year awards
in their respective circulation divisions.
The magazines
were recognized for their overall excellence in writing and reporting,
usefulness to the reader, editorial organization, interaction
with readers, and layout and design.
Selling
Power
also won the award last
year, making it the only multiple winner of this award. In
fact, this is the publication's third Magazine of the Year award
in five years. (The first was in 1997,
when the award was first instituted.)
Vernon Henry,
corporate editorial director for Advanstar Communications, was
also honored at the banquet for his 40-plus years in newspaper
and business publications, during which time he started up five
publications and 28 show dailies and developed programs to raise
editorial standards and maintain editorial integrity. (More on
Henry here.)
ASBPE's annual
awards competition, established 23 years ago, recognizes excellence
in editorial and design of business magazines and their associated
web sites.
As testament
to the importance our industry places on quality editorial and
design, ASBPE has for each of the last several years broken its
previous record for the number of entries in its annual competition.
This year's entries far exceeded last year's record pace, increasing
from 2,013 to 2,529. The ASBPE awards competition remains the
largest of its kind in the business press.
The judges
for the contest are business publishing veterans with distinguished
service as editors, designers, editorial directors, publishers,
consultants, and academicians.
