| What
the judges said... |
| A
magazine well organized in the standard one-third,
one-third, one-third formula that readers are probably
the most comfortable with. You can easily tell where
you are and the general topic. The back of the book
section always covers the same three topics of presumably
high reader interest. And within each of the three
sub-sections are useful articles with a variety of
presentation methods. The front of the book covers
more generalized issue-oriented topics, and of course,
theres the feature well in the middle. Makes
for an exciting read.
What
I like about HealthLeaders is how personable
it is, which it ought to be if were talking
about health professionals and leaders and leadership.
I like the number of Q&As with experts in the
field. These vary in form and length thus adding variety.
And when you add roundtable discussions, controversial
letters to the editor, direct requests by the magazine
for readers opinions about the publication,
and photographs of leaders, you begin to see theres
solid interaction between the magazine and its audience. |
|
| CIO
does a grand job of keeping its readers thoroughly
engaged. Page after page, useful and actionable information
is at your fingertips; you dont have to wade
through long gray passages. Numerous sidebars, bulleted
lists, display quotes, subheads, and other typographic
devices combine to give the reader quick access to
the information.
I
love many of the little things they
do for their readers. For example, the Reader
ROI tells why you should read the article; you
know in advance why you should take the time. And
they are always telling you throughout the magazine
where on their Web site you can find more information
about various topics. In fact, they devote an entire
page to a table of contents for their Web site. Even
their editorial sections have tables of contents.
And theres an index of companies and advertisers.
CIO
effectively examines the issues but also the all-important
how-to-implement steps of whatever topic
they are featuring. |

With
our Magazine of the Year award we take a step back to look at

a circulation of 80,000 or more; one to a publication with fewer
than 80,000 readers.
The
