Leading publisher of educational materials in the areas of Asian languages and cultural studies for the K-12 and higher education markets seeks a Managing Editor to join its growing team. Strategize, lead, manage, and provide hands-on execution of all editorial, production, and manufacturing activities involved in publishing quality textbooks, multimedia, interactive, and online learning products. Introduce and implement best practices and cost-effective measures to improve efficiencies and streamline processes.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strategically lead the planning, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination of new projects, revisions, and reprints, from acquisitions through binding and product release.
- Oversee, train, and lead a team of in-house editorial, production, and manufacturing staff, and freelancers, to ensure that projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and handled thoroughly and accurately.
- Manage and direct team in the day-to-day duties of project management, editing copy, providing design feedback, working with freelancers and vendors, creating detailed project instructions, corresponding with authors, and other duties as required.
- Coordinate the flow of information in-house to ensure that Marketing, Sales, and Customer Service departments are provided with timely advance product launch, descriptions, specifications, and marketing information.
- Collaborate with the Marketing team on the production of a bi-annual catalog, promotional materials, and the management of multiple websites. Train staff to write and proofread advertisements, publicity releases, website copy, and promotional materials for accuracy and effectiveness.
- Develop efficient workflow processes and procedures within the editorial, production, and manufacturing departments. Help write and update editorial training materials. Create and manage systems to track project progress and proactively identify problems and issues that need to be resolved.
- Help conceptualize and coordinate the development of new technology-based learning, such as online and video-based learning materials, e-books, mobile apps, and other interactive media.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum five years of experience managing all facets of an editorial, production, and manufacturing team for textbook materials.
- Background in textbook publishing for the K-12 and college markets preferably in the area of world languages. Must be strong in developmental editing.
- Knowledge of foreign language pedagogy strongly preferred; Asian languages a plus.
- Knowledge of ebooks, video, online learning platforms, distance learning, and other emerging educational technologies.
- Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy and a clear understanding the big picture.
- Proven record of meeting deadlines and budgets while maintaining the highest level of quality control.
- Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, electronic proofreading workflow in Adobe Acrobat, and standard proofreading and editing marks.
- Excellent planning, communication, and leadership skills, especially training, guiding, and motivating staff working on large scale and evolving products.
- Ability to wear multiple hats, be flexible, and work collaboratively within a changeable and demanding environment.
