How do I change my password?

What do the “Receive (or disable) notification” links do?
What is the difference between receiving notifications of new messages and receiving notifications of new topics?

What does it mean if a red flag appears to the left of certain topic names on the Topic List?

What does the “Manage Notifications” button do?

Q:How do I change my password to something I can remember more easily? Are there limits on the number or types of characters that can be used in passwords?

A. Go to the main Members Only page and click “Edit Your Profile.” Then simply type the new password you want to use in the “Password” field and confirm it in the “Retype password” field, and click “Save.”

For all practical purposes, there are no limits to the number of characters you can use in your password. You may enter anywhere from 1character to 60 characters. There are no restrictions on types of characters, either — you can use punctuation marks, dollar signs, etc.

Q: What does the link “Receive (or disable) a notification whenever a new topic is started” do? What about “Receive (or disable) notifications of new messages in this topic"? What is the difference between the two options?

A: Both links let you choose to automatically receive e-mail notification when there is activity on the discussion forums.

  • You can choose to be notified whenever someone starts a brand-new topic.
  • You can receive notifications whenever someone posts to a specific topic (or topics) that is of particular interest to you.

The two options above are not mutually exclusive. You can choose to be notified whenever someone posts a new topic and to be notified when someone posts a new comment under one (or more) specific, existing topics.

What’s the difference between the two options? We expect most members will mainly opt to use the second option — receiving notifications about new messages on a specific topic. The option to be notified whenever a new topic is started is there mainly for the use of ASBPE board members and staff, so that they can monitor the discussion forums.

Note that if you choose to be notified when a new topic is started, you will be notified only when the new topic is initially created. You will not be notified every time someone subsequently posts a new comment to that topic — unless you specifically go to that topic’s page and click “Receive notifications of new messages in this topic.”

Q: What does it mean if a red flag appears to the left of certain topic names on the Topic List?

A: If you have been chosen to be notified of new posts to a certain topic, a red flag will appear to the left of that topic’s name on the Topic List. The flag appears even if you have temporarily suspended your notifications (see below). It disappears only if you opt to entirely delete notifications for that topic.

Q: What does the “Manage Notifications” button do? How is it different from using the receive/disable notification links mentioned above?

A: Manage Notifications allows you to set, delete or suspend all your notifications from a single page.

Once you set notification for a topic, it will appear on your “Manage Notifications” page on your list of Individual Topic Notifications.

  • In the “Delete” column, you can check boxes next to specific topics for which you no longer want to receive notifications.
  • Separately, under “Global Notification Settings,” you can choose whether you want to:
    • receive only your listed Individual Topic Notifications.
    • receive your listed Individual Topic Notifications and receive notification whenever a brand-new topic is added to the forums.
    • suspend all notifications. This last option lets you temporarily suspend notifications — say, if you are going on vacation — while still keeping your list of Individual Topic Notifications intact. When you return from vacation, you can turn your notifications on again and the e-mails will resume as before.
  • Once you click “Update,” your changes are saved.
